Every student must agree to
- Practice regularly
- Become a member of the school string/band ensemble when ready
- Take part in all concerts and events – even if these fall on weekends
- Attend lessons, rehearsals and other classes regularly as required
- Bring their instrument, tutor book and music stand to each lesson
Jimboomba State School offers students the opportunity to participate in our Strings and Band instrumental music programmes. String lessons are available for students from Years 3 to 6. Band lessons (brass, woodwind or percussion instruments) lessons are available to students from Years 4 to 6. Recruitment of string students occurs towards the end of Year 2 and for band students towards the end of Year 3. Information is sent home to parents of Year 2 and 4 students at that time.
The students in the instrumental programs receive weekly lessons for their instrument, given by the specialist string or band teachers. Upon selection into the program, a school instrument may be hired for the first year of learning, and certain larger instruments may be hired for longer periods. Students learning any of the smaller instruments will be required to purchase their own instrument after that first year.
Students in the instrumental music program will eventually play in one of the following ensembles:
· Junior Strings
· Intermediate Strings
· Senior Strings
· Junior Band
· Senior Band
Instrumental students have many opportunities to perform throughout the year, including at our school’s Winter Concert and Summer Concert as well at Fanfare and various instrumental
Instrumental program for strings
Education Queensland provides a program of instrumental tuition at your State School. Tuition is provided for years 4 to 6 in strings (violin, viola, cello and double bass). Students receive lessons each week and when ready, ensemble experience is provided through the formation of various groups.
Instruction takes place on a group basis with approximately 3 to 8 students learning together. Students will be selected for the program according to various criteria – student’s keenness to learn, musical aptitude, commitment of student and parent both to regular practice and attendance at lessons and rehearsals.
Initial enrolment in the class is for a minimum period of one year subject to a trial period of 4 weeks. After this initial period students can withdraw from the program after parents consult with the instrumental teacher and / or an interview occurs between the student, parent, Instrumental Teacher and Principal.
Regular expenses are incurred at various times for sheet music, spare strings, rosin etc and parents must be willing to meet these.
It is expected that the parents provide their child with an instrument due to lessons being free of charge. A school instrument can be provided at a small cost through the school's instrument loan agreement.
Instrumental program for band
Education Queensland provides a program of instrumental tuition at your State School. Tuition is provided for years 4 to 6 (brass, percussion, woodwind). Students receive a 30min lesson each week and when ready, ensemble experience is provided through the formation of various groups.
Instruction takes place on a group basis with approximately 5 to 8 students learning together. Students will be selected for the program according to various criteria – student’s keenness to learn, musical aptitude, commitment of student and parent both to regular practice and attendance at lessons and rehearsals.
Initial enrolment in the class is for a minimum period of one year subject to a trial period of 4 weeks. After this initial period students can withdraw from the program after parents consult with the instrumental teacher and / or an interview occurs between the student, parent, Instrumental Teacher and Principal.
Regular expenses are incurred at various times for sheet music/ tuition books, spare reeds, cork grease or valve oil, slide grease, guitar strings etc and parents must meet these.
It is expected that the parents try and provide their child with an instrument (unless they are selected for large expensive instruments such as the tenor saxophone, baritone, trombone) if lessons are free of charge
There is an annual school levy of $40 for all students in the program and an extra charge of $66 for those students who have been selected by Jimboomba State School to play a school instrument for the year. There will be a parent information letter for successful applicants where more details will be provided about buying/hiring instruments and student requirements (books, music stand etc). Students from low income / disadvantaged families may be eligible for assistance with regard to obtaining an instrument; however this will be determined by the situation and by an interview with the instrumental teacher and the Principal.
Remember, students do not necessarily receive their first choice of instrument, rather the instrumental teacher (after observation) selects an instrument that will best suit the student, the ensemble and will ensure future success.
