Hi, my name is Karen Weston (Chappy Karen) and I am the school chaplain at Jimboomba State School.
Chaplains are supported by Local Chaplaincy Committee made up of representatives from the local churches, local school leaders, other chaplains and local businesses.
The Chaplaincy service is provided for all students, staff and their families regardless of race, religion or values. All matters raised are dealt with in the strictest confidence and without judgement. Part of my role is to network and link with other professionals/businesses in the area to provided the best care possible for those in need of a little assistance.
The Chaplain works with the Guidance Officer and other support staff to provide Pastoral Care, Social, Emotional and Spiritual support along with personal development to our students. The Chaplain is here to help and care for the students and school community by being the listener, the supporter and encourager.
Chaplaincy works on a voluntary basis. The Interaction with the Chaplain is completely voluntary. Parents, Guardians, Teachers and Students can refer people with needs to the Chaplain, however it is ultimately the individual’s choice to use the Chaplaincy service offered.
Some reasons you would see the School Chaplain would be:
• You need someone to talk too
 • Your family or friends have experienced a tragedy • You’re struggling with school or study
• Something had happened to upset you e.g. friendship
• You need help and want guidance in the right direction
• Parents need advice about parenting or family matters
• You’re concerned about someone around you who needs help
• You need a friend who won’t criticise or judge you
The Chaplain can also be involved with school Excursions, Camps, Special events, etc. Whatever is happening in the school I will do my best to be there!
Chaplains are not just a big part of the school community but also part of the local community. I love to be a part of all things happening in my community and try to help out wherever I can.
The Chaplain runs many different programs such as Breakfast Club, Social Skills and Friendship Programs, lunch time programs and fundraising activities.
I look forward to meeting and working with as many students, staff and parent/guardians as possible as together we can make a difference in young people’s lives.
